The Best Friend
Your cold and wet nose pushes itself
determinedly under my palm.
Notice me!
Your unapologetic egoism is a delight.
You are what you are, right here, right now.
There is nothing else. Only that which you can see.
And when I do notice you,
you turn into a living embodiment
of joy and laughter.
The wisdom of past generations
radiates through your eyes,
reassuring me that all will be well again.
It will.
But until that time comes, you will be there,
never judging, never questioning,
but always comforting, always absorbing
every sorrow, every worry, and every joy
I share with you.
And when there are no more days for you,
and all your colors have turned to grey and white,
you gently press your muzzle on top of my hand
and speak: ”I can go now. You will be fine.”
