The Beginning

Wet grass

brushes against my skin

with icy caresses

I push my toes

into the soft, welcoming soil

It surrounds my skin

coaxing

whispering comforting words

I'm absorbed

deeper into the ground

It encloses silently

around me

I am alone

I open my arms

to embrace

the oncoming storm

It tries to shove me

tug my hair and clothes

but ground is my friend

and it doesn't let me fall

The unrelenting wind

forces itself

down my throat

It burns on my lungs

and I'm gasping for air

I am alone

My eyes glaze over

I cannot see

the beauty of the hurricane

A lonely droplet

in the corner of my eye

begins its slow decent

down the time ridden contours

of my face

It is not a tear

I cannot cry

I am alone

I am standing here

rooted

breathing

weeping

I am alive
